I WENT on my first real trip around the new Liverpool One shopping centre on Saturday.

I have visited a couple of times before in my lunch break but I only got a far as Debenhams and that was back in early August.

So imagine my surprise when I went on Saturday. They certainly put that up quick didn't they?

My reason for visiting on Saturday was because a friend of mine came up from Gloucester especially for the day and as she used to live in this part of the world a number of years ago she wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

We got the train in, and armed with my little map, we made our way from Central Station to Liverpool One via Hanover Street.

I have to admit bits of it are quite impressive and there are a lot of big names in there. Faith and Dune caught my eye straight away for obvious reasons. But to be honest it wasn't a patch on the Trafford Centre in Manchester.

It's biggest problem in my view was the lack of a roof. Why spend all that money and incorporate such an array of retailers and then not put a roof on it? Didn't the architects think for one minute that we are in the north here, sunny Liverpool it is not as Saturday proved when it started to pour down on us half way through our trip.

The shops had their heating on full blast so you were boiling hot one minute and freezing cold the next. And there's nothing worse then trying to look around clothes shops with a soaking wet umbrella in your hand.

My friend and I did have a good look around, I think we were there for about three hours and in that time she bought two pairs of shoes and I bought one pair and a pair of boots.

The boots were from a new German shop called Deichmann which has sprung up next to my favourite Liverpool shoe shop Milano. It isn't a patch on Milano's for style and presentation but it is cheap and the brand name Graceland has secured the endorsement of the Sugababes.

My boots are a three-quarter length satin-sheen silver with a four inch heel. Very me.

So will I be venturing back to Liverpool One? Probably, because it is on my doorstep but it won't replace my weekend shopping trip to the Trafford Centre which I go to every February with my sister that's for sure.
